Membership and Staffing

NOFD's membership is made up by:
3 Full-Time Firefighters
1 Part-Time Administrative Assistant
20 Part-Time FireFighters/EMTs
53 Volunteer Firefighter/EMTs
6 Fire Support Volunteers
5 Explorer Scouts
Since our department is largely a bedroom community, the majority of our volunteers members are away at their jobs during the work week. To ensure that we are able to deliver an effective response to fires, rescues, and medical emergencies during that time, we utilize paid Firefighter staffing.

This staffing arrangment ensures that the following resources are available every Monday through Friday with the exception of regular holidays:
One 4 person engine company at our Goshen Station from 6AM to 6PM.
One 3 person engine company at our Skylight Station from 8:30AM to 4PM.
Two Chief Officers from 6AM to 6PM.

The majority of the time, our district is covered by dedicated volunteers who sacrifice thier time and efforts to serve you. We utilize volunteers in several "staffing models" to ensure the delivery of a prompt and effective response to emergencies. The traditional volunteer Firefighter staffing model simply means that upon a dispatch of a run over our pagers, any available volunteers drop whatever they are doing and respond to the closest station to man the fire apparatus, regardless of the time of day.

In addiation to this "traditional" response model, NOFD volunteers serve scheduled on-duty perios in the station and on-call periods from thier homes as follows:

Two volunteer Firefighter/EMTs are normally "on-duty" at our Goshen Station, each night of the week from 6PM to 6AM.
Two volunteer Firefighter/EMTs are normally "on-call" to respond to the Goshen Station each night of the week from 8PM to 5AM.
One Chief Officer and One Company Officer are "on-call" to respond to all runs, each night of the week from 6PM to 6AM. They rotate this duty on a weekly basis.

This program is designed to make available up to six responders every night, including two high ranking Fire Department Officers who also take care of non-emergency issues that may arise during their tour of duty.

NOFD's volunteers can pick the way they wish to participate: by the traditional "come when the pager goes off" model, or by selecting the time period they want to spend at the firehouse of a mixture of both. This is designed to allow volunteers maximum flexibility with their valuable time.
