On the night of 19 December 2011 members of North Oldham Fire Department were dispatched to a well involved structure fire at 3203 Axton Lane in the community of Skylight, Kentucky. The initial call received from a passerby at the intersection of US 42 and Axton Lane (2200 feet away) indicated that the structure fire was very visible from that point.

Units were on the scene within 8 minutes and shortly after arrival determination was made that the structure had not been occupied at the time of the fire. Due to its remote location well away from any hydrants a “rural” water supply delivery was established for extinguishment using Tankers from Westport, LaGrange and South Oldham Fire Departments in addition to North Oldham’s Tanker.

The fire was declared under control within an hour and in excess of 10,500 gallons of water were used to extinguish the blaze. The structure was declared a total loss. No-one (including Firefighters) were injured and none of the nearby residential structures on closely adjoining property were damaged.

Members of the Oldham County Arson Task Force were called to investigate the “cause and origin” of the fire and the preliminary report classifies the cause as “undetermined” although at this time no foul play is suspected. Members were clear of the scene by 0137 the following morning although the investigators were on the scene for several hours the following day.
